Reading & Use of English Exercises

Both of the sources below are good if you want to do a quick CAE reading exercise instead of a full practice test. Ideally you want to be able to do an individual exercise from either of these sources from around 7-10 minutes.

CAE Writing Help and Techniques

The Purdue Writing Owl is one of the best resources for academic writers known to man. I used it many times in high school and college, and so did most of my classmates. Anytime you want to improve your writing, this is the best place to start.

(Near) Master List of Word Formation Options

Check out the website below to see the many options and alternatives for adding prefixes and suffixes to words to change them into one of their many other forms. When it comes to the Word Formation section of the Reading & Use of English section of the CAE exam, this is one of the most helpful websites you can check out.

What’s the best textbook to prepare for the CAE exam?

The most comprehensive textbook to use to prepare for the Cambridge Advanced English exam is Ready for Advanced by Roy Norris and Amanda French. I use it in all my courses with students preparing for the CAE exam, and I wouldn’t consider using a different book.

Another invaluable resource when you’re preparing for the CAE exam is the book by Cambridge that contains multiple tests from previous exams. It’s called Cambridge English Certificate in Advanced English. There are two versions of the book available, one with audio CDs and one without. It’s a great way to prepare for the exam and get comfortable with the exact type of questions you’ll see on the exam.
